Even if you apply all of Arthur Frommer’s 6 great tips to reduce the cost of airfare, his post today, when it comes to family travel, cutting airfare costs just isn’t enough – unfortunate, but true.
On my families last trip three week trip to Provence, France in 2013, I used all the tricks I know and I saved thousands of dollars on our 4 round trip flights from NYC to Marseille, France, but it still cost us about $3,000 just to get form point A (NYC) to point B (Marseille.) That’s still prohibitive for most families, including mine!
So how does any family, including mine, afford to travel abroad?
Arthur Frommer hit the nail on the head in his post today. After giving six valuable tips to reduce the high cost of airfare, he then said “And if these tactics don’t work? Then offset the cost of airfares with lower spending at the destination. Become a true, budget traveler, as I’ve been advocating for years.”
Frommer didn’t list that as one of the six tips, but I think is his greatest tip. Most of us already know the other 6 tips already, don’t we?
Even though I am well versed and highly successful in saving a lot of money on airfare, my family still would not be able to travel abroad, the way we do, if it weren’t for what I see as Frommer’s 7th and best tip. Families simply must find a way to offset the prohibitive cost of airfare – or stay home. Unfortunately, too many families stay home. I’d like to help change that.
If you know me or have read any of my other posts or tweets, you know how my family cuts costs at our destination. If you have not, this is my tip for you.
My #1 Tip: My family doesn’t just cut, we eliminate the entire cost of our accommodations and car rental by exchanging our family home and car for family homes and cars in our travel destinations.
I don’t know of any other way to save that much money at the destination, to offset the high cost of airfare. I don’t even think Mr. Frommer has a better way. Do You?
If you want to know more, I am about to begin my series called “Why to/How to” International Home Exchange. If you are interested, stay tuned next Wednesday for the first post and every Wednesday after until I have shared it all.
